With the bad weather I had on my entire trip to the Hebridean Islands of Scotland photo opportunities were few and far between.

Dark cloudy skies tend not to throw much at you to work with, mother nature provided me with this beautiful light show during my ferry crossing from Mallaig to the Isle of Skye.

I got the title 'Natures ruins' from the subject in this shot, the sandy banks of this wee loch get no rest, for at one end of this loch is a Hydro dam which appears to be constantly modifying the waters level.

<image:caption><DIV ALIGN=CENTER>Loch Morar Sunset</DIV>

The more experience you get as a landscape photographer the more you are able to crack the forever random equation that is Scotland + Weather + time of the year = what you're gonna get, the forever changing weather in Scotland makes the first two parts of this equation forever impossible to crack but with time and experience you begin to grasp just enough understanding of how things may turn out to be successful.

What the hell am I on about you might ask ?

You hang around for a sunset, shooting away never knowing how the light will change and what will turn out as your best exposure, the sun goes down, you wait for a final flurry, possibly high cloud becoming illuminated, it comes, it goes, you wait a little longer......

I hear in my mind my good friend Dimitri shouting in his half Greek, half Scottish accent, 'That's it Scott..........We're done' !!!!!

So I pack up and head to Loch Morar, a little scouting mission for tomorrows sunrise (should it happen).........

By this time I'm driving almost directly East, away from the coast, in my mirror I see a little more light in the sky, how nice I think, almost like the final burning ember of the days sunshine, the light gets brighter, I get puzzled, the lights intensity increases I get anxious.

By this point the car is abandoned I'm cussing at why the hell this didn't happen 5 minutes earlier whilst I was still at Arisaig.

I quickly assemble my camera and tripod and hastily compose this image, at least I got something, if I hadn't moved on so quick I know for sure I'd have captured much, much more.

Ocht well....................you live and learn..................</image:caption>

It wasn't meant to be, our weather forecast was for rain and no last light to photograph, with this in mind we returned to base camp 4 bedroom bungalow.........

This shot was taken during the "Big Freeze of 2010" , the ice was weeks old and extremely thick, Oh and I'm still here to tell the tale.</DIV></image:caption>

Never mind , no-one saw me so I just brushed myself down hauled my way back onto the scar and continued shooting.</DIV></image:caption>

Landscape photographers sometimes refer to 'chasing the light' in order to capture beauty , for the previous 12 hours we were 'running from the weather' in order to get some decent sleep.

Strong Westerly winds had pounded Scotland all day, what better place to subject ourselves to such pleasures as spending the night parked under a lighthouse on a cliff at the 'Butt of Lewis' . 3 times that night we moved our motorhome in search of shelter from the gusting winds, 3 times we failed.

This shot was taken on Lewis's east coast sometime in the middle of gales, hail, sleat, sunshine and rain........</image:caption>

My latest venture was gonna be a Biggy !!

The night before I had it all planned, get up at 6.30 AM and head to Loch Achray to catch the sun rise.

Falkirk was Cold, -5 C but I was well prepared, plenty of warm clothing.

There was no mention the previous night about the frozen fog I faded into on my journey to the Trossachs. Weather reports that morning on the Radio suggested it was patchy fog so I continued on my way.

Once I reached my destination I was gutted to find the whole Loch thick with fog, the only shot I could get of any level of quality was of Trossachs Church, a pretty example of Scotland's Loch side places of worship.</DIV></image:caption>

This rock formation puzzles you on first sight, the whole area looks off another planet, it reminded me of the many standing stones found throughout Britain, at the same time though it almost reminded me of some sort of animal sanctuary, perhaps a home for monkeys or orang-utans, the only thing close to their absence was a group of young climbers of the human kind, rope for tails, shuffling up and down the rock faces till the sun went down and we all headed home............</DIV></image:caption>

Tantallon Castle just South of North Berwick fascinates and frustrates me, I've visited the area around it's ruins a few times now in search of it's best 'capture' point, where I can showcase it's crumbling but still evident beauty with the surroundings it's shared for centuries. I had visions of the castle being lit by the early morning rays of the rising sun, it came, it done it's job, sadly the scattered cloud cover metcheck promised me didn't materialise. The sky above lay naked and uninteresting making this shot a 'Could've been'.</image:caption>

Saturday looked like a washout in terms of landscape photography, a blanket white sky with occasional showers saw us take to the forests, our cottage had a book which contained lovely images of Glenashdale falls so off we went on a 4 mile round trek in hope of great opportunity. Well, the photographers in said book must have abseiled down to the falls as you could get nowhere near the foot of them. Ocht well, I got this little fall slightly further up.</image:caption>

The climb up to the Old Man of Storr didn't age me, I was quite surprised as I soldiered up the hill.
More surprising still carrying a full bag of gear, You see these striking shafts of rock from all over the Trotternish ridge on Skye's Eastern coast, I guess my extra helping of stamina and energy came from being overly keen to reach the old man. The area below is a resting place for masses of rocks deposited on a too regular to be safe basis from the ridges ever eroding walls.

Early morning sleat and hail gave the area a fresh blanket of opportunity to fall on our behinds at any given moment.</image:caption>

<image:caption><DIV ALIGN=CENTER>Kilchurn Castle</DIV>

<DIV ALIGN=CENTER>My first day out of 2010 proved to be a rather frustrating one for a few reasons, the car broke down before I even left Falkirk, then the oil light came on passing through Tyndrum and there was no sign of the spells of sunshine that certain websites said would be on show.
Never the less I was determined to shoot away. Persistent low cloud which was to end my day prematurely, covered the top of Beinn Eunaich, ice still evidence of our coldest winter spell in decades lay on the still waters of Loch Awe, the field lay silent, the only sounds of passing ducks and the 9 AM Glasgow to Oban train.
The conditions weren't the best but I was back outdoors, doing what I love most, capturing Scotland.</DIV></image:caption>

The west waters of Loch Tay see a lot of action in this area. The waters of the rivers Dochart and Lochay enter the loch here, their seasonal flows have a big influence on the lochs levels. Many species of birds rest here on the semi submerged sand bars and the local bovine population also enjoy a munch on it's fertile grassy banks. A nice place to be for all....</image:caption>

As I neared the end of this mile long dune I felt I'd searched it's faces enough, at it's low point I clambered upon it's tops, thick native grasses dominated in an almost jungle like density.

<DIV ALIGN=CENTER>Okay, so because of Porth Nanven's geographical location it doesn't qualify as being on England's "Jurassic Coast" however, the conditions and light that evening I shot there definitely felt from another period in time.</DIV></image:caption>

I'm a great lover of dogs, just wish I had the time to have my own, I can barely look after myself at the moment never mind bring up a pooch.

Bhaltos is a tiny wee settlement on the Isle of Lewis, the sleepiest of sleepy villages !!!

I think this collie was just pleased to have any sort of visitors and interaction as he/she followed us around everywhere during our short but enjoyable visit, almost in a tour guide fashion, sorry shep , no tips this time.</DIV></image:caption>

I'm no regular visitor to Skye, okay so I've visited the Island 5 times in 4 years but given it's 200 miles from home, I don't see my self as a familiar face .

My 1st visit to this area was for a 'wee change from the norm' , after all, I can't keep going back to the same spots night after night can I ?

We didn't get our final set-up completely right but the area is gorgeous in the right light and definitely worth a revisit in the future.</image:caption>
